Professor Jack Lohman CBE

Chief Executive Officer

Jack Lohman brings extensive experience working with renowned, international cultural institutions and a wide body of knowledge on museum and archives studies. Prior to joining the Royal BC Museum in 2012, Jack was the Director of the Museum of London, a post he held since 2002. There he led the £20million ($32 million Cdn) redevelopment of the Museum’s Galleries of Modern London which opened in May 2010. From 1999-2002, Jack was the CEO of Iziko Museums of Cape Town, an organization consisting of 15 national museums including the South African Museum, the South African Maritime Museum and the South African National Gallery.

Jack Lohman was educated at the University of East Anglia where he studied History of Art. He was awarded a scholarship to read Architecture at the Freie Universität in Berlin and later obtained an MA at the University of Manchester. He went on to win a British Council Fellowship Award to study Architecture and Conservation in Warsaw, Poland. He has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Westminster, London (Polish University Abroad) and East Anglia.

Jack is Vice-President of the Canadian Museums Association, a board member and former Chairman of the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland and a member of the Executive Board of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He also sits on the board of the BC Achievement Foundation, is a member of the European Academy of Museums and an editor of the journal, ‘Museum Worlds’. Jack has been a professor in museum design at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts, Norway. He is a former Chairman of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) UK 2002-2008 and a former member of the UK National Commission for UNESCO Culture Committee 2002-2010.

Jack was awarded the CBE in 2012. He received the Bene Merito Medal from Poland’s Foreign Minister in 2011 for services to Poland and was honoured by the Prime Minister of Rwanda in 2010 for his services to Rwanda.
